The Brief

Client briefed us to create a web banner for the new Golf R, the fastest Volkswagen ever made.


The Test

With 188kW and a top speed of 250km per hr, the Golf R is a fighter jet on wheels. Since fighter pilots have to pass a series of reflex tests to prove that they can fly, it made sense that prospective Golf R drivers should do the same. So, we created a web banner that functioned as a reflex test. To qualify for a test drive in the New Golf R, users had to pass the test, which was based on the same one used by the American Air-force. The user with the best time got a full race day in a Golf R at South Africa’s premium racetrack. Runners up got personalised Golf R merchandise. With the help of a simple microsite, users could share their scores from the banner and challenge their friends on Facebook, Twitter and Email. And they did.

The Microsite

A simple microsite was created. The microsite served as a link, allowing banner-users to challenge their friends on Facebook, Twitter and via email. The microsite also housed a comprehensive leader-board and a link to information on the New Volkswagen Golf R.

Campaign Results Summary

The test was taken 114,432 times in just 5 weeks. But only 8,034 people passed. It was so popular, that several people tried to hack into it. In fact, it was the most successful web banner Volkswagen South Africa has ever done. Thanks to the Golf R Reflex Test, only the worthy were able to get behind the wheel. The Golf R Reflex Test.
